The Must-Do Best Experiences in Austin Texas!
NLand Surf Park
NLand Surf Park makes surfing in Texas possible. While in Del Valle, the park is 20 minutes from downtown Austin. NLand uses modern, self-sustaining technology to turn rainwater into waves for beginners and pros. You can get a surf pass for one of their four zones or a coaching session. You can rent high-performance demo boards if you don’t have a soft board.
Radiolab Austin Detour
Audio tours will replace boring museum guides. This Radiolab-produced audio experience uses location tracking to guide you through downtown Austin, focusing on a serial killer who stalked the city in 1885. Prepare to travel back in time by downloading the Detour app. The tour is best Tuesday through Sunday between 12:30 pm and 5 pm.
This isn’t your grandma’s bingo. It combines the game with porn. Yes, porn parodies. After a couple of rounds of bingo, winners compete in comedic, compromising activities on stage for naughty prizes. The night ends with a hilarious porn parody visual round. The free event is 21+ and more fun if you leave your scruples at home. Tuesdays at 10 pm at the Highball.
Austin has plenty of swimming holes, but we bet many don’t know about this one up north. Behind Pure Austin Fitness on Braker Lane is Quarry Lake, a private lake. Good news: you don’t need to be a member to swim; just get a day pass. Whether you want to swim the full 750m course or just relax, Quarry Lake is a great swimming spot.
J. Lorraine Ghost Town
If you’ve ever driven east on Highway 290 from the city, you’ve probably passed the J. Lorraine Ghost Town turnoff. This strange recreation of an 1800s Western town is free and has an old, eerie vibe. The park also has a maze, an outdoor movie screen, a grill and bar serving the Ghost Burger, and a water slide.
Party World Rasslin’
What happens when you mix drama and improv? Theatrical wrestling league Party World Rasslin‘ holds slams at 4th Tap Brewing Co-Op. Instead of charging admission, PWR funds its events through Indiegogo campaigns so you can save your money for tasty beers. So-called party athletes in ridiculous costumes bring good versus evil stories to life for all ages to enjoy.
UT RecSports Adventure Trips
With its many parks and 300 days of sunshine, Austin is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts. Join one of UT’s adventure trips, which have included caving, rock climbing, and SUP. These trips are open to Longhorns and non-Longhorns alike (students get a cheaper deal), and they’re offered in the fall and spring to coincide with university semesters. You can even sign up for Big Bend canoeing or Hawaii backpacking.
Austin Steam Train
Austin Steam Train offers an old-fashioned alternative to the city’s traffic. The trains make round trips from Cedar Park, and you can choose which vintage car to ride. The 66-mile Hill Country train ride includes a stop in Burnet for a staged gunfight (weather permitting). The Beer Train, Murder Mystery, and North Pole Flyer are among their themed rides.
