Common roofing myths

Roofing myths are everywhere, here’s to name a few:

A new roof will solve all of my problems

False! While a new roof can help to improve the look and function of your home, it’s not a cure-all for every issue. Many factors go into whether or not a new roof is the right solution for you, so be sure to speak with a professional before making any decisions.

I don’t need to worry about my roof until it’s leaking

Again, False! It’s important to keep an eye on your roof and catch any potential problems early on. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but it will also help to keep you and your family safe.

If the roof is only 10 years old, there’s no need for me to worry about it

This is probably one of the biggest roofing myths out there today. As a general rule of thumb, most roofs should be inspected at least every 5 years – and more often than that if you live in an area with harsh conditions (rain, sun, high winds). This way, you can catch any potential problems before they become major issues.

My insurance company will pay for the damage to my roof if there’s a storm

This is not always true! Depending on what type of coverage you have with your insurance company, you may be responsible for paying for damages caused by storms or other natural occurrences. If you aren’t sure about whether or not your insurance policy covers this kind of damage, be sure to give them a call before anything happens.

If I don’t do anything about my sagging roof, it won’t get worse

Unfortunately, this isn’t true. You can’t just ignore your roof! When it starts to sag, the nails may loosen and the shingles can begin to buckle – two things that you definitely don’t want. So, if your roof is sagging, be sure to schedule an inspection right away!

I can fix my own roof with some hand tools

This is absolutely not true! A new roof requires special tools and training to do it correctly. If you try to repair your roof yourself, you could end up doing more damage than good – costing yourself even more money down the line.

I should wait for my yearly tax refund before scheduling an inspection of my roof

If this is how you plan on paying for any repairs that come about, you’re going to be in for a world of hurt. Roofs can’t wait until your tax return comes through – and, if they get bad enough, the damage could make it impossible for you to recoup your money on your taxes at all. That’s why we recommend that you schedule an inspection with a roofing company as soon as you notice any issues on your roof!

I should just replace my whole roof instead of repairing some of the damages

This is not true! Repairs are often less expensive than replacing the whole thing and will extend the life of your new roof by years. So, if there is an issue with one section of your roof, consider making only aesthetic repairs while scheduling future repairs that will address the structural problems.

I should wait until all of my neighbors have roofs done before scheduling mine

This is absolutely not true! The best time to schedule your roof inspection and any necessary repairs is NOW! Waiting for your neighbors could cause delays in getting your home fixed, and if something happens while you’re waiting (such as a storm), it will worsen the damage and cost you more money overall. Roof inspections are important, so be sure to get them scheduled right away!

It’s too expensive to replace or repair my roof

This can be a tough decision, especially if you’re on a budget. If the cost of repairing or replacing your roof would cause your family financial hardship, then by all means take a look at your other options. However, you should consider how much those repairs may cost down the line – as well as the safety concerns that come from living with a failing roof. So, look into getting help from local organizations and charities to see what kind of assistance is available in your area!

So, what’s the verdict? Are roofing myths putting your home at risk? Probably not. But there are some things you should keep in mind when it comes to your roof. For example, did you know that regular maintenance is key to ensuring your roof’s longevity? Or that different materials have different lifespans and require different levels of care?
