Do you need to know if your roof is safe, secure and undamaged after the the recent hail storm?
What you're about to learn in the next 2 minutes will put you in the top 8% of homeowners.
Hi there, I'm Joe Moore, and what I'm about to tell you can save you thousands of dollars on roofing costs and a lot of headache.
92% of roof damage from hail goes unnoticed, risking insurance claim hassles and unnecessary costs.
Did you catch that? Literally, hundreds of thousands of Texas homes have serious damage to their home that goes untreated. This can add to leaks, water damage, increased energy costs and sometimes even structural harm.
Don't worry, I'm about to show you 3 simple ways to identify roof damage from hail so you can expedite the repair process and save thousands of dollars.
Quickly Assess Your Roof for Signs of Hail Damage
Hailstorms can cause serious damage to your vehicles and your home. Since your roof protects your house and takes the brunt of the attack, it’s important to know how to quickly check your roof for signs of damage.
It only takes a few minutes to check for damage when you know what to look for!
Types of Hail Damage
There are three different types of hail damage that you have to look out for when inspecting your roof. You should be looking for missing granules, bruising and circular cracks.
Look for the Black Splotches
Look around your roof for any small black spots that stand out against your shingles. This is where the underlayment is showing through, because you’re missing granules.
Missing granules can cause your shingles to wear out faster, and begin letting water into your home years before they should. Without those protective granules, the UV rays from the sun damage the underlayment and quickly wear it out.
Feel for the Depressions
Run your hand across your shingles to feel for any depressions. Imagine what the surface would feel like if you began hitting it with a small hammer. This is what hail bruises feel like and they are a clear indicator of roof damage.
Bruises aren't always visibly noticeable, but they weaken shingles, lead to cracks, and develop leaks. If you feel bruised depressions, it’s best to act quickly and contact your local Dallas roofing company.
Locating Circular Cracks
The last thing to look for is the most obvious, and that is circular cracking. Think about how water ripples around a stone after it’s been tossed into water. This is the same thing that happens to shingles when struck by hail. Small circular cracks form around a depression from stress. These cracks weaken the shingles and can cause your seal to fail, leak, and even lead to more serious damage requiring expensive repairs.
Detecting Mild Hail Damage
Ok, good news. You may not have significant damage if you can’t find any of the signs above. Phew… However, even mild hail damage can lead to bigger problems if left un treated.
The best way to know for sure is to climb up on your roof and examine your skylights (if you have any). Go to the skylight and examine the valleys, ridge caps, and trim around your skylight. This soft metal is generally a tell tail sign for hail damage well before shingles are detectable.
Take a look at your downspouts and gutters for any black mineral debris. If you find enough of the black debris you have likely lost shingle granules there's a good chance you have some damage.
